The wire in step 1b is for fan speed control and not for the front led. Forget to plug it in (like I did at first) and you end up with a loud fan constantly running at full speed.

- imho a firewire external hard drive (this would be bootable or multi bootable - see rEFIt) is the best way to upgrade the hard disk and iomega have a 1TB unit now.
- if you are buying your mac mini new why not specify 2GB RAM? otherwise you take the same risk with RAM as any one, in as much as you get what you pay for.
- if you want real value for money why not have a go at building your own 'Hackintosh' i understand it can be done for $350 [link] (let me know if you do?)

Stuck cd in Apple computer is common problem for pc users being used to be able to poke a paper clip into a release hole! It would seem that holding the mouse button down(and keeping it held down) at boot up is the most common answer when the os does not even mount the drive. But your situation seems more dire and may well require booting your mac from an external drive in order to sort it out! Try the forum: http://www.macminihacks.org/index.php
